Website Developers Should Consider All Types of Users
One of the things I’ve noticed all too often is how shortsighted web developers can be at times. It can be difficult to see the forest for the trees when developing websites and other tools when you are creating a project for your own company.
Hiring a professional web developer with the experience necessary to see the bigger picture is essential to the success of your project. They are looking at it from the outside in, giving you a different perspective.
For instance; QuickInstall is a program managed by Mojo Marketplace. It’s accessed through CPanel. It used to be very easy to use. You clicked the icon in CPanel, chose what you wanted to install, selected the directory, username and password, then clicked install. All done.
Now, that icon takes you to a new page and asks you to log in to your account. It automatically adds your username and password from cpanel.
That’s where the problem starts. if you have more than one domain name to manage. It’s going to expect you to have an account for every single domain you own.
What the the website developers didn’t consider
- Users with more than one domain name or website that each have their own CPanel.
- Other website developers who manage multiple client accounts.
- Hosting Resellers who manage their client accounts for them.
These are important customers. They are the users that recommend the hosting company that offers Quick Install, that bring new clients to them and the people who use the tool more than single website owners because most don’t do all of their own website development.
What the website developers should have done
When clicking on that icon in CPanel, it should allow you to enter a dashboard to log into that is not just tied to that one domain name. For instance; a website developer or reseller would be able to manage the installs for all of their own websites and those of their clients from one dashboard.
Website Development is more than just coding
A good website developer or website development company has experts who understand the bigger picture and consider the entire target audience rather than just a portion of them.
“Plan your work and work your plan” is an old saying and in website development it certainly applies.
Part of that planning is thinking about how each type of user or potential customer will use your website. Going through the process from their perspective rather than your own goes a long way toward making your website development project more successful.
The example I used makes it appear as if the developers of the Quick Install don’t have a clue. I said “appear” not to have a clue, but in reality, they are probably very smart people. But poor planning leads to poor website development.
Experienced Website Developers = Better Planning
Web developers with many years of website development under their belt have already made or at least seen the types of mistakes poor planning can lead to. As a result, they have created methods and systems of getting things done that avoid those pitfalls.
Make sure your web developers understand more than coding and that they have the experience necessary to plan ahead. They should have some knowledge of SEO, Marketing, and Sales in order to develop a website that serves all of your customer’s needs.
